Types of Single Axis Joysticks

The single axis joysticks have many industrial applications. They are used for controlling winches, cranes, agricultural machines, marine equipment, construction equipment, forestry machines, medical apparatus, material handling vehicles, factory production lines, and many other applications. The single-axis joystick you buy will depend on what you need it for.

Why are they referred to as single axis?

Joysticks with only a forward and backward movement are single axis joysticks. They may also be referred to using other phrases such as a 1-dimensional joystick, 1-axis joystick, one-way joystick, or single-axis joystick. These joysticks offer one type of movement. They are available in many configurations and shapes. Some manufacturers even allow you to develop your custom-made single-axis joystick. Now that you understand what these joysticks are, let’s look at the available types.

Fingertip Control

This low-profile joystick offers precise fingertip control on a single axis. These joysticks are tiny and have been designed with low-profile assemblies. However, while they are small, they maintain a larger single-axis joystick functionality.

Roller and Rockers

These are both compact (measuring about 0.8 inches) and robust. They are built specifically for under-panel spaces. Some of these joysticks use contactless hall-effect technology for a maintenance-free operation. The technology enables them to offer the long-life integrity of the output signal. They may also be equipped with a dual-redundant architecture which enhances safety.

Joystick

If you prefer a larger controller with a comfortable grip handle, the joysticks will be ideal. They come in many sizes and with many features. Joysticks offer a reliable and accurate signal output. When installed properly, they provide the optimal combination of cost and performance. It is, however, your duty to find a joystick that is the right size and with the control technology that works for you.

What is a potentiometer single-axis joystick?

As you shop around for your preferred 1-axis joystick, you will encounter the term potentiometer. What does it mean? This is the technology used in a joystick to detect change. A potentiometer is a physical component that increases or reduces the current or voltage when moved. It achieves this using the variance of a resistance built within the electronic circuit. When force is applied, the variance of current or voltage is achieved.

While the potentiometer technology has opened doors for electronic circuit controls, it has a major flaw. The moving parts tend to wear and are thus not as reliable and durable over time. That is what makes the hall-effect technology the preferred option.
