A potentiometer is a physical component that increases or reduces the current or voltage when moved. It achieves this using the variance of a resistance built within the electronic circuit. When force is applied, the variance of current or voltage is achieved.
While the potentiometer technology has opened doors for electronic circuit controls, it has a major flaw. The moving parts tend to wear and are thus not as reliable and durable over time. That is what makes the hall-effect technology the preferred option.
